Reptile Measurement & Environmental Control

Why Environmental Control Is Important for Your Pet Reptile

If you want to keep a reptile as a pet, there are many things you should take a good look at before you proceed. While reptiles can be fun to keep, they also require a great deal in terms of care and maintenance. Reptiles can last for many, many years even when they’re kept in domesticity, but in order for them to live long lives they should be provided with only the best care possible. For reptile pets, reptile temperature control can be achieved, without having to spend much time and effort (as well as money!) in a number of ways.

Cold-blooded Creatures and Environmental Control

Since reptiles are cold-blooded creatures, it’s a given fact that they have no ability to raise or lower, in significant terms, their body temperature. It’s also a given fact that their temperature is highly dependent on their surroundings. Hence, if their surroundings are cold, they too get cold. Suffice it to say in conclusion that cold-blooded creatures are very susceptible to environmental temperatures, which is why it is of utmost importance to provide only the best reptile environmental controllers for your reptile pets.

The regulation of external and internal temperatures is an ability – or a gift, some might say – that is lacking in cold-blooded animals such as members of the reptilian species. Reptile pets basically reflect whatever temperature their surroundings – the air and the water – have. Also, unlike warm-blooded animals, reptiles do not enjoy the ability to increase or decrease their metabolism in order to regulate their body temperature. If you leave your pet reptile in an enclosure that does not have any reptile environmental controllers, such as reptile thermometers or reptile thermostats, you could put them at risk of getting too warm or too cold, which in turn could cause them to suffer from a number of diseases.

Some Important Reminders

There are a number of reptiles that can be kept as pets, including lizards such as iguanas and snakes such as boa constrictors. The thing to remember in using reptile environmental controllers is that not all pet reptiles have the same needs as far as temperature control is concerned. For example, turtles (which are argued to be amphibians but are also largely recognized as reptiles) have optimal temperatures that range between 71 to 86 degrees Fahrenheit. Their critical limit, on the upper end of the thermometer, is 95 degrees, so once their surroundings reach this temperature and stay the same for an extended period, pet turtles can die. It is important to do a little research on the optimal temperatures of your pet reptile before using reptile thermometers or reptile thermostats; otherwise, it’ll all be an exercise in futility.

Aside from knowing the optimal temperatures, you also have to do a background check on the features and prices of reptile environmental controllers available out there. It pays to read reviews written by real users so as not to be fooled by misleading marketing tactics. Also, don’t equate an expensive price tag with quality. You can find many affordable reptile accessory options that are reliable, durable, and safe for your pet reptile.
