Canned and Dried Reptile Foods – Great Options for Your Pet Reptile

Keeping a pet is something that needs commitment; it is something that needs thinking over before being done for sure. Keeping a pet requires hard work, patience, and a great deal of care – especially if the pet you are thinking of keeping is a reptile.
As with any pet, knowing what to give your reptile is one of the primary steps in ensuring the success of your endeavor, not to mention the longevity of your pet’s life. Reptiles in general are considerably able hunters and can take care of their feeding needs when they’re in the wild. As pets, however, they need the help of responsible pet owners – and you have to be one if you want your pet to survive.

Food You Can Choose From for Your Reptile Pet:

The good news is that there are many options for reptile food you can choose from. Live food, such as mice, is no doubt at the top of this list. But while live food provides nutrients as well as entertainment for a reptile pet, most pet owners don’t have the proper storage facilities required to keep live food for reptiles. Mice, along with worms, crickets and other live foods, are not really pleasant to deal with, so it’s better for you to go with reptile food that can be easily handled.

Your best options, therefore, are reptile dried food and reptile canned food. They may not be as entertaining for your pet, but at least these choices are sure not to run around the house and can be kept without much fuss. Canned reptile food allows your pet to have the nutrients it needs from its favorite species. Reptile pets such as iguanas, bearded dragons, and monitor lizards can rest assured that they can enjoy fresh food from the can. Reptile canned food usually consists of cooked and dried insects; these days, however, there are more varieties in this department, so you can easily avail of wet canned food for your pet.

Reptile canned food may also consist of vegetables. Bearded dragons, in particular, generally follow a vegetarian diet, so if your reptile pet is a bearded dragon, you should do well to choose reptile canned food with pellets, designed to contain nutrients essential for reptiles, or go for fresh greens and salads. Reptile food with pellets, whether canned or dried, must not be made a permanent replacement for fresh vegetables and fruits. Bearded iguanas as well as other reptiles look for vegetables and fruits in their natural habitat, so they should be treated to these food options when they’re kept as pets. In the same way, canned and dried food must not be made an alternative for live food either. Reptile pets, whether they come from the wild or have been bred and born in domesticity, are sure to prefer live food over mice, worms, crickets, and whathaveyou’s that are already dead.

Knowing the right food to give your pet is a stepping stone to becoming a successful reptile pet owner. It is definitely worth the effort to know your pet’s needs and wants when it comes to any of the reptile supplies items that are available.
