The Basics of Reptile Housing: A Few Points to Ponder for the New Reptile Owner

Reptiles are fascinating creatures. They may not be as ‘active’ as other more popular, furry pets but they are a joy to take care of. Well-behaved and low-maintenance (contrary to popular belief), reptiles are ideal pets for a busy person. After all, they do not bark and run after passing cars, and scratch pieces of furniture around the house. They also do not require regular walks, although it might sometimes be good to bring your pet outdoors for it to enjoy the change of scenery, or at least, the sun.

Let’s face it. Having pets is costly. However, the moment you became a pet owner, you became responsible for a ‘life’- for a living, breathing creature. A good start in your I-and-my-green-friend love story would be learning more about reptile vivariums to provide decent reptile housing for your pet.

Most pet owners get their pet while it was still a baby. So, when setting up reptile vivariums, you have to remember that these reptiles will soon grow. If you don’t want to end up building or buying reptile housing every few months, you can buy or build a fairly-sized one at the beginning.

It is not good to force a pet to live in captivity in a reptile housing which is poorly constructed. A good reptile vivarium should be large enough for you pet to move around in. You don’t have to go overboard and purchase an entire apartment for your pet.
It is simple. Make sure that your reptile vivariums have adequate floor space, hiding places, heating and UV lighting source. Maybe you would have to make a little sacrifice – in the form of letting your pet have more room by reducing your living room space a little. Do research. Find out how fast your pet grows, and up to what length or size he usually grows to. You also have to keep in mind that to keep your pet healthy, you have to clean the enclosure regularly. So, when choosing reptile vivariums, consider how easy or difficult maintenance would be.

Creating captive habitat means creating reptile housing that would simulate his natural habitat. It doesn’t have to be as complex as the jungle or the desert or wherever your pet came from. You can add reptile tank decors and reptile accessories to give hiding and basking places.

When using glass reptile tanks, make sure it is sturdy enough. You can even add frames or support to ensure that your enclosure can hold the weight of the contents – sand, litter, decors and all. Reptiles also need adequate ventilation, so keep this in mind when choosing glass reptile tanks for your pet.

Some glass reptile tanks also come with substrate heaters, something that your reptile might appreciate. However, you have to remember that in the wild, reptiles are not always hot, nor always cold, so make sure that your reptile housing is set up in such a way that your pet can be warm, or cold, to his liking. You can do this by placing climbers and hiding spots, and by making sure that the heating devices does not heat the entire reptile vivarium. This is also one of the reasons why reptiles must have ample space. They need to be able to move around so they can cool down or warm up, depending on their needs.
